WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team (1-4, 1-1) picked up their first victory of the season and in Presidents' Athletic Conference play against the Allegheny Gators (2-5, 1-1), 3-1.
Jacek Piekut (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) led the W&J offense with two goals, marking a career-high in single-game goals for the sophomore. Junior defender
Derek Errett (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) netted his first career goal.
Jonathan Barahona (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora) and
Tavan Schoenberger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) tallied two shots apiece on the day.
Piekut got the Presidents ahead early in the first half, scoring a hotshot goal at the 5:09 mark. Immediately following the opening goal, Errett dialed up a stick for the second goal of the match for the Presidents at the 12:22 mark, 2-0. Allegheny responded in the 36
th minute with a goal to reduce the W&J lead to 2-1 entering the halftime break.
The Presidents got on the board quick again in the second half, scoring in the 56
th minute off the boot of Piekut. The unassisted effort elevated the W&J lead to 3-1 en route to the conference win. W&J fended off eight total shots in the second half, one being on target.
Sophomore
Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) played all 90 minutes in goal and had four saves.
The Presidents return to action at Alexandre Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 23) against the Saint Francis Red Wolves. Action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
