WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team (3-3-0, 1-1-0) fell 3-0 to the Allegheny Gators (2-4-1, 1-0-1) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Senior captain
Maura Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) and sophomore
Rylin Bugosh (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) each had three total shots, two of which were on target. Additionally, junior
Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./OLSH) had four total shots in the contest. Altogether, 11 different Presidents recorded shots against the Gators.
Allegheny got off to a fast opening 15 minutes, but a high pressing President defense settled in to force turnovers and counter attacking opportunities. W&J rallied off eight shots during the next 15 minutes, hitting the woodwork and forcing the Allegheny goalkeeper to make four saves.
The two teams traded attacks, but neither team could find their way through as the game went into the halftime interval scoreless. The Red & Black outshot the Gators 12-6 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Presidents got a quick opportunity at the start of the second half when Bugosh made the opposing goalkeeper force a corner kick opportunity. The Gators responded and found their way through the Presidents' defense in the 63
rd minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Presidents kept pushing for an equalizer but the Allegheny back line held together. W&J continued to put together strong offensive chances resulting in an additional eight shots and three corner kicks. Heberle, Taylor, and sophomore
Natalie Faingnaert (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) each forced a save from the Allegheny netminder. Ultimately, the Gators found two additional goals in the closing stages of the match to take the 3-0 victory. The Presidents kept trying to grab a goal as senior
Dove Corrette-Bennett (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) and sophomore
Ava Capozzoli (Canonsburg, Pa./Chartiers Houston) had additional chances in the final minutes. Overall, W&J outshot Allegheny 22-15 and had the corner kick advantage 7-6.
Senior
Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) played all ninety minutes in goal for the Red & Black and recorded one save.
The Presidents return to the pitch on Tuesday (Sept. 22) when they host the Saint Francis Red Wolves. Kickoff from Alexandre Stadium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
