WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team (3-4-0) fell 2-0 to the Saint Francis Red Wolves (3-2-1) in the first ever matchup between the two programs on record.
Sophomore
Rylin Bugosh (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) led the Presidents with a four shot performance, two of which being on target. Junior
Madison Rose (Butler, Pa./Butler) had three shots off the bench for the Presidents as well.
Saint Francis got out to a strong offensive start playing fast-paced possession soccer. The Red Wolves got the advantage early by finding the back of the net in the 12
th minute. The Red & Black responded with chances from Bugosh and senior captain
Maura Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) but could not find their way through. Additionally, sophomore
Aubrey Seder (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) forced the Saint Francis goalkeeper to make an important save to keep the score at 1-0. Throughout the remainder of the half, Saint Francis kept pushing for a brace, but the W&J defense held strong to keep the scoreline 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Red Wolves found their second goal early in the second half, doubling their lead in the 49
th minute. W&J kept fighting to get a goal on the board in response. The Presidents produced three quality chances within the next ten minutes. Bugosh and Heberle each forced saves by the opposing netminder and Rose put a free kick attempt just off target.
The Presidents kept pushing to get back in the contest, but ultimately the Saint Francis defense held strong and preserved the 2-0 victory.
Senior
Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) got the start in goal for the evening. Schoch played 45 minutes and recorded two saves. Sophomore
Adysson Davis (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) recorded three saves throughout the second half.
W&J returns to the pitch for the first of two matches away from home. The Presidents' will travel to take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats on Friday (Sept. 25). Kickoff from Latrobe is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
