WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team forced 23 Grove City turnovers Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center and earned a 63-50 Presidents' Athletic Conference win over the visiting Wolverines.
The Wolverines (3-10, 2-5 PAC) committed 23 turnovers in the game, including 15 in the first half. The Presidents (9-5, 4-3 PAC) collected 11 steals, led by junior Alexa DelGreco's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) four thefts.
Both teams endured sluggish starts before the Presidents found their rhythm en route to a 46 percent shooting period. GCC pulled to within two (18-16) with eight minutes remaining in the first half before W&J made a run. The Presidents outscored the Wolverines 15-2 over the next six minutes and took a 16-point lead (38-22) into halftime.
Grove City was held to just 9-of-25 (36 percent) from the field in the opening half. From long range, W&J hit five three-point attempts, while the Wolverines missed all five of their chances.
Senior Chelsea Apke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led all scorers with a game-high 16 points after she hit 4-of-9 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Classmate Kara Seamon (Morgantown, W. Va./University) scored in double figures for the second consecutive game by chipping in a 10-point night. Seamon and DelGreco both contributed five assists during the win.
Washington & Jefferson remains at the Henry Memorial Center this Saturday for another PAC matchup against the Bethany Bison with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 pm.
