W&J Ends Losing Skid With 70-51 Triumph At Chatham

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A balanced offensive showing led the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team to a 70-51 Presidents' Athletic Conference win Saturday at Chatham, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Right from the start of the contest, the Presidents (8-5, 3-3 PAC) came out clicking on all cylinders, beginning the game on a 15-0 run. The Cougars (2-11, 1-5 PAC) did not make a shot until the 16:32 mark of the first half when sophomore Rachel McClain sunk a three-pointer.

Chatham was able to cut the W&J advantage to a single point (23-22) with just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening half.  However, that would be as close as the Cougars would find themselves in the game. Over the course of the next five minutes, the Presidents outscored their opponents 19-4 successfully which included three shots from beyond the arc.

W&J built a 20-point lead (49-29) heading into the locker rooms. The Red and Black shot 51 percent (20-of-39) from the field and an even 50 percent (4-of-8) from three-point range.

A more competitive second half followed the first with the Cougars outscoring the Presidents 22-21. W&J hit just 33 percent (10-of-30) of its shots in the second half.

Junior Valerie Dunlap (Hostetter, Pa./Latrobe) led the offensive attack with a game-high 16 points (8-of-13) and nine rebounds. Behind Dunlap, senior Kara Seamon (Morgantown, W. Va./University) and sophomore Beka Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) also scored in double figures, with Bellhy contributing 13 points and Seamon adding 11.

Junior Tori Bishop (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) led the W&J effort on the glass, grabbing a season-best 11 rebounds. The Presidents out-rebounded the Cougars 54-37 for the game.

Washington & Jefferson returns home to the Henry Memorial Center next Wednesday (Jan. 15) to take on PAC opponent Grove City at 6:00 pm.
