Waynesburg Shoots Down W&J 77-67

Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Waynesburg shot 57 percent in the second half (16-of-28) and overcame a three-point halftime deficit to post a 77-67 PAC women's basketball victory over Washington & Jefferson Wednesday evening at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jackets (6-6, 4-1 PAC) have now defeated the Presidents (7-5, 2-3 PAC) seven times in the past eight meetings between the local rivals.

Hayden Giulani and Lauren Blair both had 15 points to lead Waynesburg.  WU held a 47-33 rebounding edge and win despite committing 21 turnovers which turned into 24 Presidents' points.

W&J dominated early on, scoring 19 of the game's first 23 points.  Senior forward Chelsea Apke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had eight of her game-high 23 points during the early spurt.

Waynesburg answered with an 18-6 rally to narrow the gap to three points.  W&J junior center Tori Bishop's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) basket at the 1:46 mark proved to be the final points of the half and put W&J in front 35-32 at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first five points of the second half to grab the lead for the first time.  The game was tied on three different occasions during the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Yellow Jackets took control with an 11-2 run during a three-minute span to establish a 62-52 advantage at the 7:28 mark.  W&J closed to within four points just over a minute later, but that was as close as the Presidents would get.  Waynesburg scored 10 of the next 12 points and earned the win.

W&J was held to just 35 percent shooting (21-of-60), including 3-of-17 makes from three-point range.  The Presidents made 22-of-28 free throws.  Apke posted seven rebounds and three steals, while junior center Valerie Dunlap (Hostetter, Pa./Latrobe) notched 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.  Sophomore forward Beka Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) added 11 points.

The Presidents hope to end their two-game losing streak Saturday at Chatham (2:00 pm).
