Presidents' Comeback Stifled by First Half Deficit

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team could not overcome a 19-point halftime deficit and dropped a 92-82 Presidents' Athletic Conference decision to Saint Vincent Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center.

The Bearcats (13-5, 10-1 PAC) shot 60 percent (21-of-35) from the field in the first half to build their 19-point lead at the break. SVC also outscored the Presidents (12-6, 7-4 PAC) 15-3 from behind the three-point line during the opening half.

W&J mounted a comeback during the second half, outscoring its opposition 50-41 down the stretch. The Presidents faced a 17-point deficit with just under six minutes remaining, but went on a 12-4 run to cut the Bearcat lead to nine.

A three-point field goal by senior Alexa Burzese with 2:13 remaining brought the SVC advantage to single digits for the first time since the 8:09 mark of the first half. Saint Vincent charged down the court; however, and hit a three-point shot of its own from Elle Collins that helped end the Presidents' comeback bid.

W&J managed to turn 17 Bearcat turnovers into 18 points, and scored 22 of its 82 points on fast breaks. Senior Chelsea Apke led the Presidents' in scoring for the ninth time this season, and picked up her seventh double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Valerie Dunlap also recorded a double-double by chipping in 19 points and 12 rebounds. Dunlap was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Beka Bellhy registered her 15th game of the season in double figures by racking up 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line. Senior Kara Seamon rounded out W&J's double-digit scorers with 11 points. She also tied a season-high with eight assists and added three steals.

Burzese finished the night 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, tying a season-high, and chipped in nine points and five assists.  Collins paced the Bearcats with 25 points, while Taylor Mathers added 24.

Washington & Jefferson continues its home stand this Saturday with a PAC contest against Thiel at the Henry Memorial Center, beginning at 3:00 pm.
