PA House recognizes W&J Football program

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania House of Representatives recently unanimously approved a resolution that honors the Washington & Jefferson College football team and its winning tradition.

The resolution, titled House Resolution 1073, was introduced by state representative Brandon Neuman, who represents the 48th Legislative District in Washington County.

W&J was recognized for its 700th all-time victory which occurred on Saturday, Sept. 20 when the Presidents downed longtime rival Carnegie Mellon University, 48-30, at Cameron Stadium.

"Washington & Jefferson is a juggernaut in college football," said Neuman, a former college football player at the University of Richmond. "The school's football program is the 25th team in all National Collegiate Athletic Association divisions, and only the third NCAA Division III school, to reach 700 wins."

The resolution not only recognizes the student-athletes and coaches on the 2014 squad, but everyone who has ever donned the red and black of a W&J football uniform. Neuman referenced the inaugural team in 1890 to the Rose Bowl team of 1922 and each of the teams that has led to W&J's 30-straight winning seasons.

"Should the team remain unbeaten during its remaining scheduled games, it will be the fourth time since 2000 -- and the ninth time overall -- that it finished with an unblemished regular season," Neuman said. "The team is averaging more than 51 points a game."

Additionally, Neuman included in the resolution that a copy be presented to Presidents 12th-year head coach Mike Sirianni.

W&J, ranked 18th in the latest American Football Coaches Association Top 25 poll and 20th in the D3football.com poll, will look for win No. 703 when it travels to Bethany on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. in a contest that pits the last two remaining unbeaten teams in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
