Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – After a slow start during the opening 20 minutes, the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team came out on top of a 62-49 Presidents' Athletic Conference contest against visiting Thiel Saturday at the Henry Memorial Center.
The Presidents (13-6, 8-4 PAC) found themselves with a 27-22 halftime lead despite shooting just 24 percent (8-of-33) from the field in the opening half. A combination of W&J's 91 percent (10-of-11) shooting from the free throw line and 17 Tomcat turnovers kept the home team in front.
The second 20 minutes was different story on the offensive end for the Presidents as they made 45 percent of their shots. Thiel (4-15, 3-9 PAC); however, was able to keep the game in reach through most of the half. With just over five minutes remaining, Thiel's Amy Abdelrasoul hit a jumper that cut her team's deficit to five points (49-44).
The Presidents responded and extended their lead down the stretch though with a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the foul line, widening their lead back to double figures.
Senior guard
Kara Seamon dished out six assists in the game, moving her into sixth place all-time at W&J with 285 career helpers. Junior
Valerie Dunlap finished with her ninth double-double of the season, collecting a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Chelsea Apke (15),
Alexa DelGreco (11) and
Beka Bellhy (10) also finished in double figures for the Presidents.
Thiel's bench produced 26 points, led by Erin DiFalco's 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. W&J turned 25 Tomcat turnovers into a total of 21 points.
Washington & Jefferson concludes its four-game home stand this Wednesday (Feb. 5) when local rival Waynesburg visits the Henry Memorial Center at 6:00 pm.
