WASHINGTON, Pa. -- For the second consecutive year, Washington & Jefferson College will host a quarterfinal round game in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night at the Henry Memorial Center. The third-seeded Presidents (18-7) will meet the sixth-seeded Bethany College Bison (7-18) at 7:00 pm.Â
The W&J-Bethany matchup is one of four games being played tonight at PAC institutions. Top-seeded Thomas More hosts eighth-seeded Thiel, while No. 2 Saint Vincent plays No. 7 Grove City and fourth-seeded Westminster hosts fifth-seeded Waynesburg. If the third-ranked Saints remain undefeated by defeating the underdog Tomcats, Thomas More will host the PAC semifinals and championship game for the eighth consecutive season. TMC has won seven-straight PAC Tournament titles and has not lost in the conference tournament since
a 61-58 loss at W&J in the 2006 PAC Championship Game at the Henry Memorial Center. Â
The Presidents own a 15-11 record all-time in PAC Tournament play, including a 12-2 mark in its first game of tournament action. The Presidents also hold that same 12-2 record in PAC Tournament home games. The only setbacks at the Henry Memorial Center happened during the 2000 and 2005 championship games.Â
The Presidents and Bison met in the 2010 quarterfinals in Washington and W&J came away with a 66-65 victory on Kennan Killeen's '10 jumper with 4.4 seconds remaining. The two schools have played in the PAC Tournament five times with Bethany winning three of those contests (2000, 2001, 2004 PAC championship games). W&J Head Coach
Jina DeRubbo was the Bethany coach the last time the Bison knocked off the Presidents in the PAC Tournament.
W&J and Bethany are meeting for the third time this season and the second time in the past 72 hours. On Saturday, W&J completed its regular season with a 75-64 victory over the Bison in West Virginia. W&J led 40-27 at halftime and pulled away eight minutes into the second half by pushing the lead to 58-38.Â
Chelsea Apke led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Dunlap notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dunlap also became W&J's career blocked shot leader (135) with two late swats late in the game.Â
Alexa DelGreco (13) and
Beka Bellhy (12) also scored in double figures for the Presidents, who owned a 38-22 edge in points in the paint. Washington & Jefferson held a 44-36 rebounding advantage and dished out 18 assists, six of which came from
Kara Seamon.Â
In the first meeting this season at the Henry Memorial Center on Jan. 18, Apke produced 25 points and 15 rebounds during a 76-59 triumph. Dunlap had another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while DelGreco had another nice effort with 12 points. W&J led by as many as 17 points in the first half before a late rally brought BC to within 34-28 at the break. The Presidents led by double figures for a majority of the second half.Â
Washington & Jefferson is only two victories shy of its 10th 20-win season since 2003 and the Presidents can thank their guard play as they rank 15th out of 431 NCAA Division III teams in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.09). Seamon has provided a steady influence at the point guard position with a +2.16 ratio (29th nationally) and 5.0 assists per game (37th nationally). The Presidents only commit and average of 15.2 turnovers per contest which ranks 55th in the country.Â
Apke leads the team at 16.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. She owns the 20th-best field goal percentage in NCAA Division III this season at 56.7 percent. Seamon enters the PAC Tournament with 321 assists, 22 shy of Ann Aigner '90 for fifth place in school history. Dunlap grabbed her 600th career rebound (9th in W&J history) at Bethany and is three points away from 800 for her career.Â
Bethany is led by Taylor Verrico (13.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Sami Schott (10.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg). BC's struggles have come on the defensive end of the floor as only 16 teams in NCAA Division III have allowed more points than the Bison (77.2 ppg).Â
The Presidents extended their lead in the all-time series with the Bison to 48-31 after Saturday's victory. W&J has won 10 of the last 12 games in the series. Since DeRubbo left Bethany for W&J before the 2004-05 season, her Presidents' teams are 18-4 against her former school.
