W&J Evens Season Series With Waynesburg After 73-65 Win

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Chelsea Apke posted 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead four Presidents in double figures as Washington & Jefferson avenged an earlier loss to Waynesburg by earning a 73-65 PAC women's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (14-6, 9-4 PAC) won for the seventh time in its last eight games and took over sole possession of third place in the league standings.  Waynesburg fell to 10-10 overall and 8-5 in the PAC after turning the ball over 20 times (14 in first half) and shooting just 6-of-28 from three-point range.

Neither team held a lead larger than four throughout most of the first half until Valerie Dunlap's free throw with 52 seconds left made it a 34-28 W&J lead.  Kara Seamon added a pair of free throws shortly after to give W&J a 36-30 advantage at the break.  The game was tied five times in the opening 20 minutes and had nine lead changes.

W&J extended its lead to 60-50 at the 7:21 mark after Alexa Burzese's jumper and Seamon's three-pointer two minutes later made it a 65-54 game.

The Yellow Jackets strung together a late 11-3 run to close to within 68-65 with 2:12 remaining, but W&J held WU scoreless for the rest of the game.  Free throws from Seamon and Chelsea Apke in the final minute clinched the key PAC win for the Presidents.

Seamon delivered 13 points and eight assists for W&J, while Dunlap (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Beka Bellhy (11 points, 5 rebounds) also scored in double figures.  W&J shot 46 percent (24-of-52) and scored 18 second-chance points after grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.

Hayden Giuliani led Waynesburg with 18 points (4-of-6 three-pointers).

W&J will attempt to be the first team this year to knock off sixth-ranked Thomas More on Saturday in Crestview Hills, Ky., at 1:00 pm.
