W&J softball opens season with pair of losses in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday as it opened its season at the Dot Richardson Spring Games at the National Training Center. 

The Presidents lost to the US Coast Guard Academy 6-1 in their first game and then were edged 1-0 by William Patterson (N.J.) later in the afternoon. 

Coast Guard (6-3) scored three times in the first inning, but the Presidents plated their first run of the season in the third when Jen Bahm singled in Abby Cunningham.  Coast Guard added three more runs in the fourth to build the five-run lead. 

Cunningham went 2-for-2 with a double to lead the W&J lineup.  Emily Watson suffered the loss on the mound after allowing four earned run on six hits in the complete game. 

William Patterson scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning off of Madison Rotto, who only allowed four hits.  The Presidents' batters were limited to five singles. 

W&J plays Otterbein (9:00 am) and Allegheny (11:00 am) tomorrow in Florida.
