W&J starts west coast swing with 1-2 record

PASADENA, Calif. -- Three freshmen scored goals Wednesday morning to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 12-4 victory over Macalester (Minn.) at Cal Tech.  Late Tuesday night, the Presidents suffered a 14-3 loss to sixth-ranked Redlands. 

In the Presidents' final match Wednesday, Division III's third-ranked Whittier Poets knocked off W&J by a 9-3 margin.

Laura Travers, Brittany Patterson and Sarah Latzo all had two goals against Macalester.  The match was added to the Presidents' schedule in California after being postponed Sunday in Utica, N.Y. 

Allison Rocha, Rachel Clauss, Randi Cartwright, Catherine Villa, Madison Nervig and Margot Wummer all added one goal for W&J (5-5).  Ally Hopkins was solid in goal with 11 saves. 

Sara Boldt, Tess O'Neill and Mariel Mancini supplied the Presidents' goals in the loss to Redlands.  Boldt, Villa and Travers netted the goals in the Whittier setback.
