W&J softball wraps up Florida trip with 5-3 record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Dubuque (Iowa) 7-6, but fell to Utica (N.Y.) by a 2-1 margin on Thursday at the Dot Richardson Games at the National Training Center.

The Presidents wrapped up their annual spring trip with a 5-3 record.

W&J grabbed a 1-0 lead in the victory over Dubuque when Kelsey Cunningham singled and scored on a passed ball.

DU scored the next five runs, but W&J rallied to tie the game in the sixth.  Sadie Marak doubled home the first run and Emily Watson followed with a two-run double.  Watson scored to tie the game after Abby Cunningham's double.

Dubuque took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, but W&J rallied once again.  Chalese Wilson singled with one out and Kelsey Cunningham delivered a two-out base hit to keep the inning alive.  Courtney Roperti reached first base on an error and both Wilson and Cunningham to score.

Watson picked in the pitching win in relief after she pitched 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit.  Kelsey Cunningham had two hits, scored two runs and stole a base.

Madison Rotto took the loss in the second game despite holding the Pioneers (3-3) to six hits, while striking out five.  She also singled twice in three at-bats.

Utica broke open a scoreless game with a two-run single in the fifth.  W&J loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but was only able to score one run when Jen Bahm crossed the plate.
