W&J softball splits with Marietta in home openers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Morgan Figura went 3-for-3 and knocked in the Presidents' first two runs to lead Washington & Jefferson's 3-1 softball victory over Marietta Thursday afternoon at Brooks Park.  The Pioneers (8-6) earned a win in the nightcap by a 5-2 margin. 

Figura collected three singles and brought home Madison Rotto and Abby Cunningham with a two-out single to center field in the second. 

Hannah Tarski delivered a RBI single in the third to bring the Pioneers to within 2-1, but Figura singled and scored on Courtney's Roperti's base hit in the fourth to pad the lead. 

Emily Watson preserved the win for Rotto by tossing the final two innings. Watson picked up her first save of the year by limiting Marietta to a pair of hits and striking out two.  Rotto evened her record at 2-2 after holding the Pioneers to three hits (4K, 4BB). 

Kelsey Cunningham, Abby Cunningham and Roperti all added two hits for the Presidents, who totaled 10 base hits off of MC pitcher Alexis O'Hair.  O'Hair struck out four Presidents. 

W&J's lone runs in game two came during the third inning when Kelsey Cunningham drilled a two-run homer to left field.

Brittany Curry led off the game with a solo homer for Marietta, while Trinity Schlabach hit a two-run home run in the fifth for the game's final runs.  Schlabach earned the win on the mound by throwing 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. 

Krista McCartney suffered the loss for W&J after allowing five runs on eight hits.  Eight different Presidents had base hits, including Figura, who picked up a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh.
