WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson started its home weekend of women's water polo action at the Henry Memorial Center with Friday morning victories over Grove City (10-6) and Monmouth (14-8) at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
Over the next three days on the W&J campus, 28 water polo matches will be competed featuring teams from Pennsylvania, Illinois, Connecticut, New York, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The Presidents and Wolverines opened the league play weekend at 9:00 am. The match was tied 5-5 after three quarters, but W&J fired in five goals in the final eight minutes to earn the win.
Rachel Clauss led the Presidents with four goals (three during fourth period) and one assist, while
Sarah Latzo added a pair of scores.
Sara Boldt (4 steals) forced the tie after three quarters with a goal one second before the period ended, while
Margot Wummer,
Laura Travers and
Brittany Patterson also scored for Washington & Jefferson (9-7).
Morgan Kinyon (10) and
Ally Hopkins (4) combined for 14 saves in goal.
In the win over Monmouth (Ill.),
Julia Nadovich recorded 14 saves. W&J led 10-3 at halftime and cruised to its ninth victory of the spring.
Gabriele Rodriguez totaled four goals, three steals and one assist, while
Allison Rocha and
Brittany Hopkins both contributed three goals.
Mariel Mancini,
Randi Cartwright,
Catherine Villa and
Aly Fishbough all netted one goal.
Tess O'Neill handed out a pair of assists.
