W&J advances to ECAC semifinals after 79-72 victory

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Beka Bellhy fired in 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting to help fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson advance to the ECAC Division III Women's Basketball South Tournament Semifinals after a 79-72 victory over fifth-seeded Marymount (Va.) Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center.

The Presidents (21-8) advance to play top-seeded Catholic (20-6) in the ECAC semifinals Saturday in Washington, D.C. The top-seeded Cardinals defeated eighth-seeded Neumann 74-67 to advance.  No. 2 McDaniel will face No. 3 Saint Vincent in the other semifinal.  Times will be announced Thursday.

Chelsea Apke added 21 points and 11 rebounds for W&J, while Kara Seamon produced 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals.  During the first half, Seamon moved into fifth place all-time at W&J as she has now dished out 349 career assists.  She also played in her 111th career game (T4th all-time in program history with current W&J assistant coach Emily Hays).

W&J led 36-31 at halftime and shot 52 percent overall (29-56).  The Saints (17-11) got off to a slow start as they missed their first 10 shot attempts, but still managed to grab an 11-10 lead at the 11:18 mark.  W&J held the Saints to just one basket in the final 4:20 of the first half to take the five-point lead into the break.

Aliya Roseborough kept the Saints in the game during the second half with three-point shooting.  Her triple with 12:25 left tied the game (46-46), but Apke scored three-straight baskets for the Presidents to regain control.  After another Roseborough triple brought MU to within 55-51 with 7:41 remaining, Apke and Bellhy sparked a 7-0 run and W&J stretched the lead to double digits before sealing the win from the free throw line.

W&J made 19-of-28 free throws to overcome a 48-33 disadvantage on the boards.  Katelyn Fisher led Marymount with 17 points and six assists.

Washington and Jefferson and Catholic will meet for just the second time in history.
