W&J season comes to an end in ECAC Semifinals

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Top-seeded Catholic started the second half on a 15-4 run to open a 17-point lead and defeat Washington & Jefferson 90-71 Saturday in the semifinal round of the 2014 ECAC Division III South Women's Basketball Tournament at the DuFour Athletic Center.

The Cardinals (20-6), who canned 14-of-23 three-pointers, advance to play the winner of the McDaniel/Saint Vincent game in tomorrow's championship game, while the Presidents' season comes to a close with a 21-9 record.  W&J lost in the ECAC semifinals for the second consecutive season.

Catholic started off hot with an 18-7 lead and extended its advantage to 32-16 after Emily Grabiak's three-pointer at the 7:39 mark.

Alexa Burzese helped bring the Presidents with three baskets and Apke's jumper 38 seconds before halftime brought the deficit down to 39-37.  However, Michelle Desantis answered with a layup and two Grabiak free throws with two seconds remaining gave CUA a 43-37 halftime edge.

The Presidents had just four field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Catholic built its lead back to double digits before pulling away for good.  Catholic outscored W&J 47-34 in the second half.

Grabiak paced three Cardinals in double figures with 22 points.

Washington & Jefferson's 21 victories this winter tied for the sixth-highest, single-season total in school history.
