Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson won a pair of PAC softball games over Grove City on Saturday (2-0 and 8-6) at Brooks Park to extend its current win streak to four games. However, the Presidents needed a late rally to ensure their third doubleheader sweep of the season.
In the second game, the Presidents erased a one-run deficit during their final at-bat, scoring four times in the seventh inning. Trailing 5-4 in the final frame,
Abby Cunningham ripped a one-out double to left center, scoring
Courtney Roperti. After a pitching change,
Madison Rotto broke the deadlock with a two-run single, scoring
Sadie Marak and Cunningham.
Jen Bahm provided an insurance run, knocking a RBI single to right center, plating Rotto.
W&J led 4-1 in the fifth after a solo home run by Marak. Grove City responded with a four-run sixth to surge into the lead, including a three-run shot to left center by Kelsey Shirey tied the game at four. The Wolverines (4-17, 0-10 PAC) managed another run to grab the lead, but were unable to maintain it in the seventh.
Junior pitcher
Bethany Shepherd picked up the final three outs for the Presidents, earning the save, and preserving the win for
Krista McCartney. Rotto started and allowed four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings (2K).
McCartney also earned the win in game one, scattering just four hits, while surrendering three walks in seven innings of work. The pair of victories improved her overall record to 3-2.
In the opening contest, the Presidents scored both of their runs in the sixth inning. Roperti and Marak each reached base to start the frame. After a successful sacrifice bunt by
Emily Watson,
Abby Cunningham singled to left, scoring Roperti. During the next at-bat, Cunningham swiped second base. The throw sailed into center field, allowing Marak to dash home. Â
The victories boost the Presidents' record to 14-6, with an 8-2 mark in the PAC. They will return to action on Sunday with a road doubleheader at Penn State-Behrend. First pitch for the non-conference matchup in Erie is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
