Saints halt Presidents' win streak with sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Ronni Burns picked up both pitching victories during Thomas More's PAC softball sweep of Washington & Jefferson by scores of 8-0 (5 innings) and 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon.  W&J saw its six-game win streak come to an end. 

Burns fired a two-hit shutout in the opener as she struck out eight Presidents.  In the nightcap, she entered in the bottom of the fifth inning in relief of Mamee Salzer with the game tied 1-1 and shut the door on W&J with three scoreless innings (6K).

Thomas More (20-7, 9-1 PAC) broke open game one with four runs in the bottom of the third.  Salzer and Alex Walter had RBI doubles during the inning.  In the fourth, Haley Shuemake's two-run double helped the Saints end the game after five innings.

Jen Bahm and Courtney Roperti had the lone W&J hits in game one.  Madison Rotto's record dropped to 5-4 in the circle after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. 

W&J (16-8, 8-4) plated in the first run in the second contest during the bottom of the fourth inning.  Abby Cunningham singled and scored on Bahm's base hit. 

Thomas More tied the game in the fifth on Walter's solo homer and then grabbed a 2-1 advantage on Stefaney Turner's RBI single in the sixth.  Shuemake and Walter tacked on run-scoring singles in the seventh for insurance runs. 

Bahm and Kelsey Cunningham both had two of the Presidents' six hits in game two.  With 178 career hits, Cunningham is now three away from tying Amanda Howard for the Presidents' all-time record. 

Krista McCartney pitched 6 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs (four earned) on 11 hits. She struck out two Saints and walked four.
