Courtney Roperti's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one helped Washington & Jefferson post a 3-2 PAC softball victory over Bethany at Brooks Park. The Bison (18-22, 10-8 PAC) forced the doubleheader split with a 4-0 shutout in the second game.
W&J (21-9, 13-5 PAC) will be the No. 3 seed for next week's PAC Tournament which will be hosted in Crestview Hills, Ky., by Thomas More. The Presidents will take on second-seeded Geneva in their first game.
The Presidents trailed 2-0 in the first contest after two innings before rallying. In the fourth,
Emily Watson reached on an error and scored on a passed ball to cut the lead in half. Roperti then blooped a single into left field in the fifth which scored
Jen Bahm and
Kelsey Cunningham with the eventual game-winning runs.
Krista McCartney earned her eighth win of the season in relief as she tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings and held the Bison to three hits (2BB, 3K).
Kelsey Bish pitched both games of the doubleheader for BC. She allowed four hits in the first game before twirling a five-hit shutout in the nightcap. She fanned six Presidents in game two.
Bethany scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning on two-run singles by Marissa Bosley and Jessica Kusnierz.
Emily Watson (6-2) took the loss for W&J after allowing four runs on eight hits in the complete game. She struck out three and issued three walks.
