W&J stays alive in PAC softball tournament with 3-2 win

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Krista McCartney held fourth-seeded Bethany to five hits and Emily Watson produced a key two-run single as third-seeded Washington & Jefferson remained alive in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Tournament after holding off the Bison 3-2 Thursday night at Thomas More College.

The Presidents (22-10) advance to play top-seeded Thomas More (30-9) in another elimination game Friday at 11:00 am.  The Saints, who were knocked off by No. 2 Geneva 5-4 in a winner's bracket game, swept the regular-season doubleheader between the two schools on April 16 in Kentucky.

W&J opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth.  Sadie Marak led off with a single, eventually moved to third base and scored on Jen Bahm's two-out single.  The lead grew to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth on Watson's bases-loaded single that scored Morgan Figura and Courtney Roperti

The Bison (18-24) responded with two runs in the sixth before putting two runners on base (first and third) with two outs in the seventh.  However, first baseman Madison Rotto made a nice play in foul territory to grab the final out and keep the Presidents' season alive.

McCartney improved to 9-3 in the circle after limiting BC to one earned run, while striking out a pair.  The Presidents were held to six hits by Kiersten Conwell (4 1/3 IP), who took the loss.
