Geneva scores four late to defeat W&J at PAC Tournament

Box Score CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Second-seeded Geneva scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Tournament after defeating third-seeded Washington & Jefferson 5-2 Thursday afternoon at Thomas More College.

The Presidents (21-10) will face fourth-seeded Bethany in an elimination game today at 5:30 pm.  The Bison were edged by the host Saints 4-3 in 10 innings during the opening game of the tournament.

W&J scored the first run of the game in the first inning as Kelsey Cunningham and Courtney Roperti led off with singles and Cunningham scored on Emily Watson's ground out.

Laura Beck homered to lead off the fourth inning; however, W&J responded with a run in the fifth.  Roperti led off with a single and Abby Cunningham followed with a two-out single to regain the lead.

Washington & Jefferson was only six outs away from victory when Geneva struck for four runs off of starting pitcher Madison Rotto.  Beck tripled home the tying run and pitcher Samantha Johnson's single scored Beck with the go-ahead run.  Mackenzie Kemerer's double made it a 4-2 game before Krista McCartney took over in the circle.  Brittany Clark's RBI single added an insurance run for the Golden Tornadoes (22-14).

Johnson (18-8) allowed a base hit in the seventh before retiring the final batter on strikes.  She scattered 11 singles and struck out four in the complete game.

Rotto struck out eight batters, but allowed five runs on seven hits.  Kelsey Cunningham, Morgan Figura and Roperti all had two hits to lead the Presidents.

W&J and Bethany split a doubleheader on Saturday at Brooks Park.
