W&J softball season comes to an end after NCAA Tournament loss to DePauw

Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. -- DePauw broke open a 5-5 game with 14 two-out runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 19-7 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament victory over Washington & Jefferson Saturday at Trine University.

The loss ends the Presidents' season with a 25-12 record.  W&J claimed its third Presidents' Athletic Conference championship and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

W&J scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning on Courtney Roperti's two-out, two-run single.  After DePauw plated a run in the third, W&J answered with a Jen Bahm run-scoring single in the bottom of the third.

Four DePauw runs in the fourth inning put the Presidents behind 5-3, but W&J responded with a two-run double from Abby Cunningham to tie the game.

Neither team was able to score again until the seventh.  DePauw had a runner on second base with two outs and a Presidents' throwing error allowed the first of 14 runs to score.  Three different W&J pitchers worked the inning and the Tigers strung together 10 hits to put the game out of reach.

W&J did not give up, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh.  Breana Gleason's RBI double scored Bahm and Kelsey Cunningham followed with a run-scoring single.  Cunningham had two hits during her final game for the Presidents.  She finished her career as W&J's all-time leader in hits and runs.  Emily Watson, Bahm and Gleason all added two-hit afternoons.
