Kelsey Cunningham doubled home
Breanna Gleason with the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning Friday afternoon to help third-seeded Washington & Jefferson advance to the championship game of the 2014 Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Tournament after a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Thomas More.
The Presidents (23-10) will face second-seeded Geneva (23-14) in the championship game at 1:15 pm. W&J will need to defeat the Golden Tornadoes twice as Geneva enters with a 2-0 tournament record, while the Presidents are 2-1.
W&J is making its fourth appearance in the PAC championship game (2002, 2006, 2007) and is hoping to claim its third conference title (1996, 2006).
Krista McCartney (10-3) silenced the Thomas More bats all game by firing a three-hit shutout. She walked three and struck out four Saints. Two of Thomas More's base hits were infield singles and she surrendered only one hit after the second inning.
With one out in the seventh inning, Gleason singled down the left field line.
Morgan Figura's sacrifice bunt moved her to second base and Cunningham's school-record 47th career double scored Gleason with the lone run of the game.
Ronni Burns (12-6) was the tough-luck loser for the Saints after she held W&J to four hits (3BB, 5K).
