W&J drops two-overtime match against La Roche, 2-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Playing its second double-overtime match in as many contests, the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team fell, 2-1, to La Roche in the 2014 home opener at Alexandre Stadium.

With the loss, the Presidents fall even to 1-1 on the season after opening with a 2-1 double-overtime win at Mount Aloysius on Saturday. The Redhawks improve to 2-1.

Justin Carter opened the scoring on an assist by Connor McKenzie, giving W&J a 1-0 lead just 1:54 into the second half following a scoreless opening frame.

La Roche tied the game, 1-1, in the 72nd minute on a goal from Ryan Luffey. Luffey assisted on the game-winner in double overtime which was scored 6:38 into the period by Brian Wargo.

W&J led in shots, 20-13, with McKenzie leading with four and Jason Menni tallying three shots.

Jon Best suffered the loss in goal after playing a clean first half and then giving way to Ben Wilt who played the second half an allowed a goal. Best returned to the match for the overtime portion and made three saves total.

W&J travels to Denison on Saturday, Sept. 6 for a 2 p.m. match to conitnue the season.
