VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team scored its first-ever victory over an NCAA Division I program with a 14-13 win against St. Francis (Brooklyn) to open the 2015 campaign.
The Presidents notched the victory over a Division I school for the first time in program history and marked the first season-opening win since a 15-7 triumph against Salem International kicked off the 2012 year.
Sarah Latzo paced the offense against the Terriers with five goals.
Laura Travers and
Brittany Patterson each recorded hat tricks in the win, while
Rachel Clauss scored twice and
Madison Nervig added a goal.
Ally Hopkins earned the victory in goal, making 13 saves on the day.
W&J also competed against host Villanova, suffering a 17-8 decision to the Division I Wildcats to begin the season 1-1.
Latzo found the back of the net three times in the night cap to lead the Presidents. Clauss, Travers,
Tess O'Neill,
Aliya Abdelhak and
Elizabeth Klock each scored in the loss.
Hopkins made four saves and
Morgan Kinyon added two stops in goal against the Wildcats.
Continuing action at the Villanova Invitational on Sunday, W&J suffered a pair of losses against Division I opponents with a 14-4 loss to Siena and 15-2 setback against Iona. Latzo scored twice against Siena and Patterson found the back of the net in each contest.

W&J travels to Grove City for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Friday, March 6, before playing the only two home games of the season on Saturday, March 7.
