Presidents set to host ECAC Division III South Championship

By Anthony Socrates, Sports Information Intern

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The semifinal round of the 2016 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Women's Basketball Championship will feature two games played at the Henry Memorial Center in Washington, Pa. Saturday's matchups include third-seeded Stevenson versus seventh-seeded Waynesburg at 1 p.m. After the conclusion of the first game, top-seeded Washington & Jefferson will take on fourth-seeded Marywood, scheduled for 3 p.m.

Waynesburg is led by eighth-year head coach Sam Jones and hails from the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). This is the second-straight year that the Yellow Jackets have participated in the ECAC South tournament. In the quarterfinal matchup, Waynesburg completed an upset by toppling second-seeded McDaniel, 78-73, shooting 50 percent from the field. The Yellow Jackets improved to 15-13 on the season, after finishing third in the PAC at 11-7, and are looking to execute another upset when facing Stevenson. A big contribution to Waynesburg's success has been the play of sophomore forward Addy Knetzer. Knetzer is averaging 14.1 points per game (Pts/G), a field goal percentage (FG%) of .505 and 9.1 rebounds per game (Reb/G).

Fifth-year coach Jackie Boswell leads Stevenson who comes out of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth. The Mustangs, from Owings Mills, Md., own a 15-10 record with an 11-5 conference record as well as a defeat of sixth-seeded Neumann, 85-60, in the ECAC quarterfinal matchup. The 85 points scored by Stevenson are the second-most in program history, only behind the school-record 90 scored against Polytechnic on January 17, 2005. The Mustangs led 47-33 in rebounding, 52-30 in points in the paint and shot 52.3 percent for the game, while limiting Neumann to 34.8 percent shooting. Stevenson's junior forward Sara Tarbert, a 2015 All-American, accounts for a large portion of the Mustangs' success by scoring 21.5 (Pts/G) while shooting 55.6 percent from the field and grabbing 11.5 (Reb/G).

Marywood, located in Scranton, Pa, owns a 19-8 record with a 15-1 conference record, after capturing the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season title. The Pacers advanced to the ECAC Division III South Region women's basketball semifinals for the first time in program history with a 65-55 victory over fifth-seeded Delaware Valley. Under 12th-year head coach Tara Macciocco, Marywood shot 35 percent from the field to the Aggies' 36.5 percent. The win marked the Pacers' first ECAC victory in five tournaments. Marywood's efficiency can be contributed in large part due to significant contributions from several key players: Gabrielle Giordana 13.2 (Pts/G), Alexa Gerchman 5.8 (Reb/G) and 3.1 (Ast/G) and Natasha Hessling 51 percent from the field.

First-seeded Washington & Jefferson, led by head coach Jina DeRubbo in her 12th season. The Presidents come into Saturday's game holding a 23-5 overall record after a second-place showing in the PAC at 16-2. W&J is coming off an overtime win versus eighth-seeded Penn State Behrend with a score of 96-91. The 23 wins are tied for the second-most in program history, while the 96 points posted by W&J tied the fifth largest amount for W&J. A large contributor to the Presidents' success is Beka Bellhy who averages 19.4 (Pts/G) and 8.1 (Reb/G). She has bested her career-high in three of the last four games and notched her fifth career 30-point game, her fourth in the last nine games, with 38 points in the quarterfinals.

The winners of both games will face off for the ECAC Division III South Championship at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6 at the Henry Memorial Center.
