WASHINGTON, Pa. – In a home matchup against Penn State Behrend, Washington & Jefferson topped the Lions 10-8, advancing its win streak to 12 and moving its record to 12-4 overall and 12-0 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).
After suffering a 4-0 deficit in the first quarter, W&J got on the board with a goal in the final moments (0:23) of the second quarter when
Laura Travers found the back of the net with help from
Tess O'Neill.
In the third quarter, Penn State Behrend struck first but the Presidents closed the 6-1 gap by scoring five goals in a row. O'Neill was once again there with the helper, this time on a goal by
Liz Klock at 5:10.
Rachel Clauss then capitalized on a five-meter penalty shot at 4:51, 6-3. Klock put up a pair on the day when she notched her second goal at 4:14 with an assist from
Brittney Patterson. Another penalty shot by Clauss moved the Presidents to a margin of one, which was closed less than a minute later as Clauss completed a hat trick, tying the game 6-6.
It was the Lions who pulled ahead 7-6 with a goal to open the fourth quarter, but W&J was quick to answer when
Sarah Latzo scored thanks to help from Travers. A pass from O'Neill to
Madison Nervig turned into a goal with 2:46 remaining in the fourth, bringing the score to 8-8. Nervig then assisted on Patterson's goal 43 seconds later (2:03), giving the Presidents their first lead of the game (9-8), which they held for the remainder, solidifying the 10-8 win when O'Neill completed her fourth assist and Latzo scored at 1:42.
Ally Hopkins made 12 saves on the day, with a game-high of six in the third quarter.
W&J will travel to Grove City, Pa. to take on the Wolverines in a matchup set for 7:30 pm tonight.
