Presidents open season with 1-2 showing at PSU Behrend

Opponent: Penn State-Behrend Invitational - La Salle University
Result: W, 7-6
 
How it Happened: The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team began its 2017 season at the Penn State-Behrend Invitational and won its opener, 7-6, over La Salle.
 
Top Performers: Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) led the Presidents' offense with three goals in the game, scoring twice in the second quarter and once in the fourth.
 
The Rest: Madison Nervig (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), Tess O'Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Brittney Patterson (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Liz Klock (New Lennox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) all scored one goal to round out the first game scoring for W&J. Patterson and Klock scored in the third quarter while Nervig and O'Neill netted their scores in the third.

Opponent: Penn State-Behrend Invitational - Mercyhurst
Result: L, 7-14
 
How it Happened: The Presidents fell in their second game of the day, 14-7, to Mercyhurst.
 
Top Performers: O'Neill and Lexie Gartner (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) led the way with two goals each for the Presidents' offense. They both scored once in the second quarter while Gartner added her second goal in the third and O'Neill scored again in the fourth.
 
The Rest: Magyari, Patterson and Nervig contributed one goal each for the Presidents. Ally Hopkins (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) played all four quarters as the netminder and made three saves.

Date: Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, 10:30 a.m.
Where: Erie, Pa.
Opponent: Penn State-Behrend Invitational - Lindenwood (exhibition)
Result: W, 15-6
 
How it Happened: W&J kicked off its second day of competition with a 15-6 exhibition win over Lindenwood.
 
Top Performers: Nervig led the offense with four goals in the game, two in the second quarter and two in the third, while Magyari and Klock each recorded a hat trick. Magyari scored once in the first, second and third quarters and Klock scored once in the first and twice in the second.  
 
The Rest: Patterson and Sarah Latzo (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) both scored twice and Gartner tallied a goal to round out the scoring. The Presidents used a 7-0 run from the second to third quarter to put the game away.

Date: Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, 3:00 p.m.
Where: Erie, Pa.
Opponent: Penn State-Behrend Invitational - Gannon
Result: L, 7-12
 
How it Happened: The Presidents concluded their opening weekend with a 12-7 loss to Gannon.
 
Top Performers: Magyari and Patterson scored two goals each to lead the W&J offense.
 
The Rest: Nervig scored once in the first quarter and Klock contributed a score in the second, rounding out the scoring for the Presidents. Hopkins made eight saves in goal as she played all four quarters.

What's next: The Presidents will return to the pool on Friday, Mar. 24, to face Connecticut College (12:20 p.m) and Macalester (4:20 p.m.) followed by a Saturday doubleheader against Utica (9:00 a.m.) and Carthage (3:40 p.m.) in New London, Conn.
