ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team was able to come back and force overtime, but the effort was not enough as Macalester prevailed, 10-9, in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship game on Sunday afternoon, April 23.

Paige Adams (Mohnton, Pa./Govenor Mifflin) and
Brittney Patterson (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) were both able to find the back of the net once each before the end of the third to pull W&J back to within two goals at 5-3. Patterson scored again to start the fouth quarter and was quickly followed by a goal from
Madison Nervig (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) to tie the game at 5-5 just over halfway through the final frame.

After the Scots regained a one-goal lead, Patterson scored twice to give the Presidents their first lead of the game with 1:02 left. But the Scots were able to respond once again with a goal just 13 seconds later to force the game into overtime.

In the extra period, both teams exchanged two goals each, with the W&J goals coming from
Liz Klock (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Gartner, before Macalester scored the championship-clinching goal with 18 seconds to play.
Lexie Gartner (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) provided the first Presidents' goal in the second quarter, after ending the first quarter down 2-0, but Macalester responded with three consecutive goals to gain a 5-1 edge.

Patterson finished with four goals in the game to lead the Presidents' attack while Gartner scored twice and Nervig, Adams and Klock added a goal each.
Ally Hopkins (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was able to stop 12 shots as the goalkeeper, including five saves in the second quarter.
Hopkins, Latzo and Nervig were each named to the All-Tournament First Team at the conclusion of the tournament while Klock earned a slot on the Second Team.
The Presidents finished the 2017 season with a 17-5 overall record with a 16-2 mark in CWPA games.
