WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo seniors combined to score seven of the team's 10 goals in their 10-7 Senior Day win over Carthage on Saturday, April 8.
Â
The win gives the Presidents a 1-1 record on the day and a 3-1 two-day record with one game to play in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Regional.
Â
It took
Sarah Latzo (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) just 17 seconds to find the back of the net against the Lady Reds for the early 1-0 lead. After the teams exchanged one goal each,
Madison Nervig (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored with nine seconds remaining in the period to give the Presidents a 3-1 lead.
Â
After both teams scored twice in the second period, the Presidents used a 4-0 third quarter to open their lead to 9-3 as four different Presidents scored in the frame. The Lady Reds responded, however, with three straight goals in the fourth before Latzo scored yet again to push the W&J lead back to 10-6. Carthage scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game to yield the final margin.
Â
Latzo scored four goals, giving her a team-high five between the two Saturday games, while Nervig scored twice to give her a two game total of four.
Tess O'Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Lexie Gartner (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson),
Macel Reising (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and
Paige Adams (Mohnton, Pa./Govenor Mifflin) all scored once each to round out the W&J scoring.
Ally Hopkins (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) came up with 13 saves in goal for the Presidents, including four in her third quarter shutout.
Â
The Presidents will look for their fourth win of the weekend on Sunday, April 9, when they host Connecticut College at 12:45 p.m. in the final day of the CWPA Division III Regional.
