Dr. Charles "Pruner" West '24 elected to Rose Bowl Hall of Fame

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Tournament of Roses has announced the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame's Class of 2017, which features Washington & Jefferson College alumnus Dr. Charles "Pruner" West '24.

Dr. West is one of four men being enshrined this year, joining former University of Texas head coach Mack Brown, UCLA quarterback Cade McNown and University of Michigan Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson.

"These four individuals epitomize what the Tournament of Roses and Rose Bowl Game stand for," said Tournament of Roses Football Committee Chair Brad Ratliff. "This class has exhibited strength, passion, tradition and honor in relation to college football, but also in making a difference in their communities."

Dr. West was the first black quarterback to play in the Rose Bowl Game when W&J played the University of California to a 0-0 tie on Jan. 1, 1922. It remains the only scoreless tie in Rose Bowl Game history, an accomplishment likely to remain with the implementation of overtime to settle ties in college football. Unique to W&J that day, was that despite traveling across the country with 17 players, the Presidents played just 11, meaning that those 11 played every snap on both sides of the ball. The 1922 Rose Bowl Game was the final game at Tournament Park in Pasadena before the game was moved to Rose Bowl Stadium, where it remains today.

In addition to being a standout football player, Dr. West was an accomplished track & field athlete as well, winning the National Collegiate Pentathlon at the Penn Relays in 1922 and 1923 and being named to the 1924 U.S. Olympic team, although he did not participate due to injury.

Upon graduation from W&J, Dr. West, a Washington, Pennsylvania native and Washington High School graduate, signed with the Akron Pros professional football team, but retired to attend the Howard University Medical School in Washington, D.C. He went on to maintain a general medical practice in Alexandria, Virginia for more than 50 years, and received the W&J Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1978. He passed away on November 20, 1979.

Dr. West joins teammate Russ Stein '21 in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. Stein, the Most Outstanding Player in the 1922 Rose Bowl, was part of the third class of inductees in 1991.

The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at noon PT on December 30, 2017, outside of the Rose Bowl Stadium, two days prior to the kickoff of the 2018 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual. This year's game will feature two of the top four teams in the country, with the matchup of the No. 1 and No. 4 teams or the No. 2 versus No. 3, on Monday, January 1.

The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame was established in 1989 to pay tribute to members of the Rose Bowl Game who have contributed to the history and excitement of the game, and those who embody the highest level of passion, strength, tradition and honor associated with The Granddaddy of Them All®.
