How it Happened: The Washington & Jefferson water polo team began its quest for a CWPA Championship with an 8-6 win over Monmouth (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first quarter, Monmouth outscored W&J 3-2 in the second. The responded by outscoring Monmouth in both the third (3-1) and fourth quarters (3-2) to take the game.
Top Performers: Paige Adams (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Aliya Abdelhak (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) both notched two goals in the game to lead the W&J offense as the four combined goals all came in the second half.
The Rest: Marissa Whitby (Los Angeles, Calif./Eagle Rock), Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Macel Reising (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Lexie Gartner (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) all contributed one goal each for the W&J offense. Megan Arseneau (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) came up with nine saves in the contest, including four in the third period.

Result: L, 7-3
How it Happened: In game two of the day, the Presidents dropped a 7-3 decision to Connecticut College.
All three W&J goals came in the third quarter as the Presidents held a 3-2 margin over the Camels for the quarter to cut their deficit to 4-3. But Connecticut College answered with a 3-0 score in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Top Performers: Adams, Whitby and Kirsten Yatsko (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) scored once apiece for the W&J offense.
The Rest: Arseneau stopped six shots in the contest, two in the second and third quarters and one in the first and fourth frames.
Date: Sunday, April 15, 2018, 11:40 a.m.
Where: Villa Maria Academy – Erie, Pa.
Opponent: Carthage
Result: L, 11-6
How it Happened: In the third-place game, the Presidents fell to Carthage, 11-6, to finish in fourth place at the CWPA Championship.
The game was tight through one half of play with Carthage holding a slight 3-2 edge over the Presidents before outscoring W&J 5-1 in the third quarter to pull away for good. Both teams finished the game with three goals each in the fourth quarter.
Top Performer: Gartner was a force for the Presidents' offense, scoring four times in the game, including two goals in the fourth quarter.
The Rest: Reising and Abdelhak closed out the scoring for W&J with one goal apiece. Reising's goal came in the third quarter while Abdelhak's came in the fourth. Arseneau came up with five saves in the game, one in each of the first three quarters and two in the final frame.
At the conclusion of the tournament, W&J head coach Nikola Malezanov was named the Coach of the Tournament.?
