PASADENA, Calif. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team concluded its California trip with competitive 13-11 defeat at Caltech on Monday evening.
The Beavers raced out to an early 5-1 advantage midway through the game's first quarter. However the Presidents answered with five-straight goals in the period's final 3:49 to carry a 6-5 advantage into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw three ties and three lead changes as the teams went back and forth.
Robert Koch's (Worcester, Pa./La Salle College) tally with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter knotted the match at eight, however Caltech found a goal with two seconds remaining in the half to carry a 9-8 lead into the break.
In the second half Caltech reeled off four-straight goals to build a 13-8 advantage with just over two minutes to play in regulation. The Presidents rallied late with four goals, but came up short 13-11.
Cam Spicer (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) led the way for W&J with three goals on four shots. Koch,
Anthony Ames (Canyon County, Calif./Canyon) and
Andrew Edwards (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep)each chipped in with two goals.
Will Kitsch (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Elijah Muzzi (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) found the back of the net once each.
Zishou Ma (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos) and
Caine Dusza (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) split time in net for the Presidents. Ma logged four saves and four steals while Dusza allowed just five goals in 16 minutes with one save.
The Presidents head to New London, Conn. this weekend for another round of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference games. The Red and Black will take on McKendree, Connecticut and Salem on Saturday and Sunday.
