W&J earns Saturday split in close contests with CWPA rivals


ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo concluded a busy week with a pair of matches Saturday at the Penn State Behrend Invitational Saturday in Erie. 

The Presidents earned an 11-10 win over the host Lions Saturday morning. W&J suffered a tough 11-10 setback to Grove City Saturday afternoon.

W&J 11, Penn State Behrend 10

The Presidents edged the host Lions in the opener by an 11-10 score. The scored was tied at 2-2 after the first before the Lions took a 6-5 edge into halftime. W&J seized momentum and the lead in the third. The Presidents outscored the Lions by a 4-2 margin in the third to take a 9-8 edge into the fourth. Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored all four W&J goals in the decisive third.

Each team found the back of the net twice in the fourth quarter as W&J picked up the victory. Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) tallied the eventual game-winner with 3:38 to play. 

McClellan added three assists to her four-goal effort in the win. Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif. / Claremont) back McClellan with three goals of her own. 

Vanessa Gonzalez (La Verne, Calif./Bonita) registered a goal and a pair of assists. Anastaica Didovich (Venice, Fla./Venice) recorded a pair of defensive blocks. 

Cecelia Weiss (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) tallied 11 saves for the Presidents. 


Grove City 11, W&J 10 

The Presidents were edged by the Wolverines by a single goal. Grove City built a 4-2 lead after the first and held a 6-4 advantage at halftime. W&J seemed poised to pull out another close victory after a strong third quarter. Neumann registered three goals in the third as W&J outscored Grove City by a 5-2 margin to take a 9-8 lead into the fourth. 

However, the Wolverines scored the first three goals off the fourth as they earned an 11-10 win. Neumann scored with 2:03 to play to pull the Presidents within a goal but W&J was unable to even the score from there. 

Neumann finished with a team-best four goals in the loss. Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) fired in three goals for W&J. Weiss made eight saves in net.
