NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team continued its strong play against CWPA Division III opponents Sunday when they downed Penn State Behrend and Utica in a pair of divisional contests. W&J won 11-7 over Penn State Behrend before adding a 19-3 victory over Utica to close up a 3-1 weekend.
The pair of wins coupled with an overtime victory for Penn State Behrend over Grove City on Sunday secured the East Division III regular season title for W&J. The Presidents, who finished divisional play with a 7-1 record, earn the top seed from the east and the No. 2 overall seed at the upcoming CWPA Division III Championships, which will be held on April 21-23 at Grove City College. W&J will face the winner of the matchup between No. 7 seed Wittenberg and No. 10 seed Utica on Thursday, April 21 at 6:40 p.m.
W&J 11, Penn State Behrend 7
In the opener Sunday morning, W&J beat CWPA rival Penn State Behrend for a third time in as many tries this season.
Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) registered a hat trick with a team-best four goals.
Marcella Gallardo-Russell (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz),
Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and
Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) scored two goals apiece during a balanced effort for W&J.
Kate McKiernan (Columbus, N.J. / Pennington) and
Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) each found the back of the net once.
Cecelia Weiss (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) recorded nine saves to earn the win in goal.
W&J 19, Utica 3
Eight different Presidents scored in the decisive win over the Pioneers.
Kimber Randolph (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) shined for W&J against Utica. The senior shined with a hat trick in the regular season finale.
Mekkiye Ergun (Chicago, Ill. / Lake View), Neumann and Gallardo-Russell recorded hat tricks as well, as each scored three goals as well.
DePrez, McClellan and
Anastacia Didovich (Venice, Fla./Venice) scored two each while
Jillian Curtis (Woodland Hills, Calif. / El Camino Real Charter) added a goal for a balanced W&J offense.
Freshman goalkeeper
Felicia Filippini (Reading, Pa. / Muhlenberg) played the duration of the contest in goal and totaled 10 saves.
