Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Thiel College in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both squads Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The win was the sixth straight for the Presidents in the head-to-head series. The current W&J winning streak dates back to the 2017 season.
Following a 3-1 victory over Penn State Altoona in their last match, the Presidents won back-to-back games for the first time in 2022. The win improved their overall record to 4-3 this season.
The Tomcats held off the Presidents early on into the matchup as W&J nearly scored in the opening minutes of play. Less than 10 minutes into the contest, both
Zach Bowser (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) and
Claude Irankunda (Dayton, Ohio / Spring Valley Academy) had scoring chances from close range. Irankunda narrowly missed a scoring opportunity, as he hit the left post after collecting a rebound.
The Presidents and the Tomcats were held scoreless through the first half of play. W&J tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 78th minute of play.
Jacob Lee (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) would set up classmate
Parker Byas (Columbia, Md. / Mount Saint Joseph) for the score. Byas collected the pass and sent a shot just past the rapidly approaching Tomcats' keeper for the goal.
W&J out-shot Thiel by a 18-4 margin over the 90 minutes of play. The Presidents attempted seven of the nine corner kicks in the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md. / South Carroll) recorded three saves to allow W&J to preserve the shutout victory.
The Presidents travel to Latrobe to face Saint Vincent College in a PAC match on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m.
