Women's Water Polo opens 2023 slate



GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo team opened the 2023 season this weekend at Grove City College. W&J dropped a 15-10 decision Friday versus Wittenberg before falling to Division II Salem (17-7) and Gannon (19-14) on Saturday afternoon. 

Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the team offensively this weekend with 14 goals in the three games. McClellan had six goals in the loss to Wittenberg Friday. Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) added in two goals against the Tigers. 

Neumann finished with a team-high three goals versus Salem. McClellan added in a pair of scores. Mekkiye Ergun (Chicago, Ill/Lake View) and Kate McKiernan (Columbus, N.J./Pennington) each added in a goal against Salem. W&J trailed 4-1 after the first and 7-3 at halftime. W&J trailed 12-5 after the third before losing 17-7. 

McClellan registered a team-high six goals in the weekend finale versus Gannon. Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) tallied five goals in the loss to the Golden Knights. W&J trailed 6-1 after the first ad 11-7 at halftime. The Golden Knights stretched the lead back to six (18-12) after three before finishing off the 19-14 win. 

The Presidents return to competition on Saturday, March 4 at Wittenberg.
