ERIE, Pa. --
Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) fired in the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team edge Penn State Behrend by a 14-13 score Friday evening in CWPA Regional Tournament action.
McClellan matched the team high with four goals Friday. The eventual game winner came with 50 seconds remaining in overtime.
Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) also registered four goals in the narrow victory.
W&J raced out to a 6-2 lead after the opening quarter of play. However, the host Lions ripped off four straight goals to even the score at 6-6. McClellan scored with just 23 seconds left in the second quarter as the Presidents took a slim 7-6 advantage into halftime.
Behrend opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals to take a one-game advantage. W&J responded with a string of scores and regained the lead when DePrez found the back of the net for a 9-8 lead at the 3:30 mark of the third. PSB closed the quarter with two of the next three goals and the match was even at 10-10 after three quarters.
Both teams scored three times in the fourth and the match headed to overtime tied at 13. McClellan scored the game-winning tally with just 50 seconds remaining in overtime.
Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif. / Millikan),
Kate McKiernan (Columbus, N.J. / Pennington) and
Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa. / Villa Maria Academy) finished with two goals apiece.
W&J faces Connecticut College (9 AM) and Utica College (10:15 AM) in CWPA Regional Tournament action on Saturday, March 18.
