Late surge pushes W&J past Caltech in California

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Washington & Jefferson College Women's Water Polo created a late scoring surge to take a slim 12-11 victory over the Caltech Beavers during their Spring Break trip to California Tuesday morning.

The Presidents got off to a quick lead as the offense came out hot, as Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif. / Millikan) found the back of the net for the first two scores of the matchup for either side. The Beavers would respond with two goals of their own to even the score at 2-2 midway through the first quarter. McClellan scored again to momentarily give W&J a one-goal lead. However, the Beavers scored with just 11 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Both teams scored a pair of goals in the second quarter. Megan DePrez (Claremont, Califl./Claremont) scored at the 3:07 mark to even the game at halftime with a 5-5 score.

Freshman Sky Wald (Granada Hills, Calif. / John F. Kennedy) would score the Presidents first quickly followed by McClellan scoring her third goal of the game. Caltech would post a commanding response of five straight goals throughout the back end of the third into the middle of the fourth as they took a 10-7 lead by the middle of the fourth quarter.

W&J would go on to match the Beavers as they posted a five-goal run as well to give the Presidents a 12-10 lead with only minutes left in regulation. McClellen would score three of the Presidents goals during this run while DePrez and Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa. / Villa Maria Academy) would each add a goal during the spurt. The Beavers would score one late goal with 1:12 left on the clock but could not gain the equalizer.

McClellan led all players with a match-high six goals. Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Neumann would hold the team-high today in assists with two.

Alliey Cunningham (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) registered eight saves in 32 minutes of work.

The Presidents will remain in California for their last Spring Break game to matchup against the Westcliff Warriors on Wednesday, March 22. The matchup is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. EST / 12 p.m. PST.
