NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo team dropped a 14-10 decision to Macalester College in the third place match of the CWPA Division III Championship tournament hosted by Connecticut College at the Jane Cadwell Lott '36 Natatorium.
Macalester came into the game firing on all cylinders after being upset in a close 8-7 match against Austin College in Saturday's semifinals.
The Presidents fell behind by a 5-1 after the first quarter. Macalester opened with five-straight goals before
Hallie Ratcliff (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) would find the back of the net for the Presidents' lone first quarter goal at the 1:41 mark.
W&J would put up a valiant comeback effort, limiting the Scots to just two goals in the second and third quarter while tallying four in the second and three in the third to head into the final quarter trailing by a slim 9-8 margin.
Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan),
Emma Halle (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), Ratcliff, and
Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored consecutively in the second to lessen the Macalester lead going into the third with a score of 7-5.
Neumann would once again find the net in the third before
Anastacia Didovich (Venice, Fla./Venice) would join the offensive ranks netting her first goal of the game at the 2:30 mark. Halle would put in final goal of the quarter, scoring with just 53 seconds left until the buzzer to bring W&J within one.
Despite a strong effort from the Presidents in the middle quarters the Scots would rally back for another five-goal quarter while limiting the Red & Black to just two goals to claim the 14-10 victory. The final two goals for W&J were scored by Neumann in the final four minutes of play.
Neumann led the way with four goals in the match. Halle and Ratcliff both scored twice.
Sky Wald (Granada Hills, Calif./John F. Kennedy) made six saves in goal for the Presidents.
For their efforts throughout the tournament, Halle was named First Team All-Tournament with Ratcliff achieving Second Team All-Tournament.
