Paul Sets Record in Second-Straight Week as Track & Field Splits Action at Two Invitationals

The Washington & Jefferson college track & field teams competed in split action at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon University and the Tim Weaver Invitational hosted by West Liberty University. The Presidents logged nine personal-best in day one of the two invitationals.
 
Julian Paul (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) highlighted the men's team, setting a school record for the second-consecutive week. Paul set a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a new personal-best time of 9:29.11 to place second. Paul surpassed former teammate Aden Dressler's top time of 9:33.84 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase from the 2023 outdoor season. Paul also placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.96.
 
Nick Desanto (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the Presidents in the jump events. DeSanto took a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a top leap of 1.94 meters (6' 4.25"), barley missing the school record by .01 meters (0.50 inches). He also placed 15th in the long jump with a distance of 6.12 meters (20' 1").
 
Cole Pawich (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) posted a productive weekend at West Liberty. Pawich finished fourth in the javelin throw with a top toss of 44.86 meters (147' 02"). Pawich also placed 31st in the hammer throw with a heave of 29.13 meters (95' 07").
 
Brock Pennington (North East, Pa./North East) placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:59.46.
 
Anthony Cestaro III (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers) led the Presidents in the short distance sprints. The junior finished ninth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.07. He also placed 13th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.18.
 
Claire Anderson (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown) led the W&J women with a fourth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:29.00.
Sarah Schneider (Warren, Ohio/Lordstown) and Lainey Hartner (Washington, Pa./Fort Cherry) led the W&J women in the hurdle events. Schneider finished 16th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.73 while Hartner took 16th in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 1:13.28.
 
Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area) made her season debut at West Liberty. Kovalchick placed 16th in the shot put with a top heave of 10.32 meters (33' 10.25").
 
The Presidents return to action next Saturday (April 5) at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University.
