THE SERIES: The lone gridiron matchup between Washington & Jefferson and Hampden-Sydney took place in 1989, when the Presidents blanked the Tigers, 23–0, at College Field. W&J totaled 409 yards of offense, highlighted by 111 rushing yards from running back
Chris Babirad '94. The Tigers struggled to move the ball, managing just 159 total yards. Presidents quarterback Jeff Ivory completed 8 of 14 passes, throwing for two touchdowns, while H-SC's Ben Coiner went 7 of 13 for 61 yards and threw two interceptions. The matchup will be the first between the teams to be played at Hampden-Sydney.
RICH TRADITION: The Washington & Jefferson football program has won 790 games in its 132-year history (790–406–40), ranking third among NCAA Division III schools behind Mount Union (869) and Wittenberg (805). Widener (733) and Wabash (726) round out the D-III top five. Across all NCAA divisions, the Presidents' win total places them 22nd all-time.
SWEET SEPTEMBER: W&J has enjoyed consistent success in September under
Mike Sirianni, going 69–13 (.841) since 2003. The Presidents opened September this season with a loss to Utica in Week One.
NON-LEAGUE LISTINGS: W&J's Week One matchup with Utica marked the Presidents' first nonconference regular-season game since opening the 2022 campaign with a 35–26 victory over John Carroll. Week Two takes W&J to Virginia to face Hampden-Sydney, giving the Presidents two non-conference games to start a season for the first time since 2017.
LOOK WHO IT IS: Head coach
Mike Sirianni has assembled a 2025 staff blending new faces with familiar ones.
Sam London joins as an assistant coach after stops at Saint Vincent (offensive coordinator) and Waynesburg. Several recent standouts from last season's roster are staying close to the program as intern assistants:
Jacob Pugh '25 (defensive backs),
Anthony Rosati '24 (receivers),
Owen Petrisek '25 (tight ends), and
James Dawodu '24 (volunteer assistant). Two more alumni round out the staff:
Jordan West '20 (running backs) and W&J Hall of Famer
Todd Pivnick '94 (offensive line).
