BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior
Claire Anderson (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown) collected Second Team All-American status with a 14th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run Friday evening at the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. The event is being hosted at the Birmingham Cross Plex in Birmingham, Ala.
Despite falling within the first three minutes of the race, Anderson battled through and raced to a time of 17:08.29 to earn second team status.
Anderson logged a qualifying time in the 5,000-meter run with a program-record time of 16:48.20 at the GVSU Holiday Open hosted by Division I Grand Valley State back in early December to put herself in position to compete in Friday's NCAA event amongst the top runners in Division III.
This marked the second time that Anderson competed at NCAA Division III Championship Indoor Track & Field Championship event. A two-time All-American in Cross Country, Anderson has now participated in five NCAA Championship events overall. Her previous Indoor Track & Field participation at Nationals came in the Mile in 2024. Anderson posted an historic third place finish this past fall at the 2025 Division III Cross Country Championship meet.
Head Coach Andy Upton on Claire Anderson (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown)
"I'm extremely proud of Claire and the Indoor Season that she had this year. Today was a day that by no means defines her season or where she stands with the nation's bests. Some times things happen that you never plan on and sometimes things happen that are out of your control. Today was that day for Claire. However after getting tripped up twice during the race I thought she showed a lot of guts and talent to stay in that race and fight until the very end. She was hanging tough and it looked like something special might possibly happen. At the end of the day the two falls just took too much out of her. For her to finish 14th with how the race unfolded was very impressive. It shows just how talented she really is. I also know that this is an experience that she will use as motivation as we shift gears to outdoor season. Claire Anderson (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown) will be a stronger runner coming out of this meet and I'm excited to see what is in store for her over the next three months."
