Women’s Golf Wins Pennsylvania Classic for Second Consecutive Season

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's golf team won its third invitational of the season and first of the spring at the Pennsylvania Classic hosted at Division I Penn State University. This marks the second consecutive season that the Presidents have won the Pennsylvania Classic, posting a team score of 661 through 36 holes.

Top W&J Individual: MacKenzie Schmeltz (Edwardsburg, Mich./Saint Joseph) climbed the ranks with an impressive round two at the Pennsylvania Classic as the Presidents' top golfer. Schmeltz had a round one tally of 80 strokes before coming back in the second round with a mark of 75. With her final round performance, the junior climbed to a tie for third place with Ava Johnsen of York College.
 
Notables: Megan Joyce (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) finished behind Schmeltz as the next best golfer for W&J. Joyce was consistent between her two rounds, shooting an 81 on day one followed by an 82 on round two to finish seventh. Julia Barthelemy (Crescent, Pa./Moon Area) finished in a tie for 10th place, finishing with a round high of an 82 in the opening round. Lauren Tekely (Glendale, W.Va./John Marshall) rounded out the Presidents' top finishers in a tie for 15th place with a total tally of 175 over both rounds.
 
Tournament Highlights
Top Team: W&J took home the Pennsylvania Classic crown for the second consecutive season. The team finished with a total 661, seven strokes ahead of second-place Susquehanna University.
 
Top Individual: Kennedy Petrovich of second-place Susquehanna led the event through both rounds. Her opening round score of 71 guided the River Hawk past the likes of Katie Rose Rankin of Westminster College who finished five shots off the frontrunner.
 
Up Next: The Presidents return to the course on Saturday (April 11) to compete in the Westminster Spring Invitational.
