Presidents' Water Polo Claims Third Place At D3 Championship Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Ninth-ranked Washington & Jefferson College defeated Connecticut College 17-9 Sunday afternoon to earn third place at the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship hosted by Johns Hopkins University at the Newton White Athletic Center.

On Saturday, W&J defeated Penn State-Behrend by a 16-6 margin before falling to M.I.T 22-18. Early Sunday, the Presidents (13-14) were defeated by top-seeded Johns Hopkins 22-14. Washington & Jefferson's 13 victories tie for the second-highest total in school history, joining the 2001 squad.

The Presidents are six wins away from tying the school record of 19 set in 2002.  In the loss to the Blue Jays, junior Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) scored in each quarter and led the Presidents with four goals. Classmate Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and freshman Nick Willison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) both added three goals.  Willison pumped in five goals in the tournament opener versus Penn State-Behrend, while Krause and Magdic both compiled hat tricks. Senior goalie Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) produced six saves.

Willison had another five-goal match in the MIT setback. Krause also netted five, while sophomore Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) fired in four goals. Freshman Patrick Fredrick (San Francisco, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) found the back of the cage twice and junior goalie Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) totaled nine saves in three quarters of action.

W&J will close its season at the Southern Division Championships which will be hosted by the Naval Academy Nov. 8-10.
