WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents earned a third-place finish at the 2014 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Tournament with a 17-12 win over Connecticut College.
Following the tournament, Washington & Jefferson third-year men's water polo coach
Jay O'Neil was named the CWPA Division III Coach of the Year, while senior
Mike Magdic was named First-Team All-Tournament and sophomore
Nick Willison earned Second-Team laurels.
Patrick Fredrick gave the hosts a 1-0 lead 48 seconds into the game. Magdic scored the next two goals and Willison found the back of the net before Magdic added his third of the game with 2:18 left in the quarter.
Kevin Dunigan capped the scoring and W&J led 6-2 after eight minutes.
Dunigan opened the scoring for the Presidents at the 5:47 mark of the second and Willison's second goal was book-ended by a pair of tallies from Fredrick to send W&J into halftime ahead 10-4.
Fredrick and Willison each recorded a pair of second-half goals as W&J earned the victory in the third-place contest.
Fredrick led all players with five goals. Willison added four as both players scored in each quarter. Magdic finished with three scores.
The win pushed the third-seeded Presidents to 12-10 on the year, while the fourth-seeded Camels fall to 3-10.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology captured the tournament championship with a 14-10 win over Johns Hopkins.
W&J is back in action at the Princeton Tournament on Sat.-Sun. Oct. 25-26.
