Presidents rally to force split with La Roche

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- La Roche scored 10 times in the third inning and defeated 25th-ranked Washington & Jefferson 13-3 in game one of a non-conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.  The Presidents rallied to earn the split in game two after Kyle Smith's bases-clearing double in the bottom of the sixth inning helped W&J win 5-3.

The Redhawks (6-4), who defeated a nationally-ranked opponent for the second-straight game, received three hits and four RBI from Brian Tougher.  La Roche scored twice in the first and tacked on 10 in the third after seven consecutive batters reached base.  The last time W&J gave up 10 runs in a single inning came on April 26, 2003, at Grove City during Head Coach Jeff Mountain's first season.

Catcher Ronny Peirish hit an opposite-field home run for the Presidents (2-2) in the third inning.  He finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.  Kyle McLain also had two hits for the Presidents, who left 13 men on base after compiling 12 total hits.  Every W&J player in the lineup recorded at least one base hit.

Cole Lentz earned the win on the mound for La Roche, allowing one earned run on six hits in four innings.  Tyler Dean suffered the loss for the Presidents after allowing eight runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.  Mike Vizzini pitched the final 4 2/3 innings for W&J and surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits, while striking out a pair.

Tougher blasted a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left field in the first inning of game two and Alex Simone added a RBI double in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Washington & Jefferson got one run back in the bottom of the fourth as Peirish walked and Kyle McLain plated him with a double.

In the sixth, the Presidents' first three batters reached base and after a strikeout, Smith delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon with the three-run double.  Two batters later, Cory Bauer singled home Smith for a two-run advantage.

McLain came on in the seventh and allowed two singles and a walk before striking out Tougher was the bases loaded to end the game for his second save of the year.

Josh Staniscia had two hits and scored two runs for W&J in game two, while McLain went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.  Joe Vita earned his first career victory on the mound after battling for six innings.  He gave up three runs on six hits and struck out a pair in six innings.

W&J returns to action on Sunday in Leesburg, Fla., against St. Norbert for a 10:00 am doubleheader at Pat Thomas Stadium.
