25th-ranked Presidents sweep St. Norbert in Florida openers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. -- Eddie Nogay collected his 24th career pitching victory in game one and No. 25 Washington & Jefferson rallied with three runs in the seventh inning of game two to sweep a doubleheader at Pat Thomas Stadium from St. Norbert Sunday in the first two of eight games the Presidents will play in Florida during spring break. 

The Presidents (5-2) captured game one by a 12-4 margin and then edged the Green Nights 5-4 in the second contest, 

Nogay improved to 2-0 this spring and 24-1 overall after limiting SNC to one earned run (four overall) on six hits in five innings.  He struck out seven and walked three. 

W&J fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first inning, but plated four of its own in the bottom half.  Kyle Smith brought home Ronny Peirish for the third run with a double. 

After the Green Knights got to within 4-3 in the third, Peirish delivered a two-run single and Smith added a sacrifice fly for a 7-3 lead.  Smith tacked on another RBI single during a four-run sixth and finished the game with two hits and three RBI. 

D.J. Michalski went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs, while Josh Staniscia was 3-for-4 with two RBI.  He also scored twice.  Peirish knocked in three and crossed the plate twice. 

W&J grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two, but the Green Knights scored three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for a 4-2 advantage. 

The Presidents rallied in the seventh with one out.  Staniscia's RBI single made it a 4-3 game and Peirish followed with a two-run single that plated Derek McIlvane and Smith with the eventual game-tying and game-winning runs. 

Trevor Kerr pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory.  Brian O'Neill worked the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits (6 K).  McLain got the final three outs for his third save. 

Anthony Paladino went 2-for-2 with a run to lead the W&J lineup, while McIlvane notched two hits and scored twice.
